Try a Dive

Our main try-a-dive night of the year will be on Wednesday 24th September. Anyone wanting to try scuba diving before deciding whether to join our club for training is welcome. (You need to be fairly fit, and healthy on the night - no colds). Phone 01721 729849 for more info or to book a place. Please see our Try-a-Dive information. (Experienced divers are also welcome to get in touch to join us for pool sessions or open-water trips.)

Training Day

Sunday 21st September should see our next training trip - probably to Loch Fyne, but maybe the east coast weather and tides permitting. Look out for emails or contact one of the instuctors.

Training evenings

Our winter pool nights start again at the end of the month (for the try-a-dive) with the first "normal" session on Wednesday October 1st, then every week until December 10th. Members old and new meet at Peebles Pool at 8:45pm. Our introductory lecture evening will be on Wednesday 8th October at 7:45pm at the McFarlane Hall, Peebles, but lectures proper will start on 29th October as many of our instructors will be on the Cyprus Trip before then.

To mark the 5th birthday of Borders Sport and Leisure Trust (BSLT) 2008 Peebles Swimming Pool are holding a 'party' at their venue on Sunday 31 August.

Between 1 and 2pm PeebSAC will provide a snorkelling session for youngsters (some adults might come along too!!) followed by a Try a Dive session between 2-3pm.

Training Day

Sunday 17th saw PeebSAC trips to Loch Lomond and Loch Fyne for a training day. More details and photos soon.

Barbecue!

The weather was in fact scorching for the Barbecue in July and it was a great success. See the Gallery section for Marion's report with pics from Jim T and Hugh.

21 August 2008

Congratulations

Well done to James Frost who completed his BI assessments last night at Sunny Dunbar . Those present were Murray MacCallum (RC), Hugh (BDO), Del (trainee) and Graham (sport diver).

Barbecue!

Club members with email should have got this message from Marion (or Hugh):

27 July - We meet at St Abbs Harbour for a dive in the am and then nip next door to the fabby beach at Coldingham Sands for the BBQ. Approx High Tide that day is between 9-10am ish, so perfect for meeting for a dive with a decent amount of water and get to Coldingham for lunchtime to fire up our BBQs. There is an area next to the Beach Hut Café with picnic tables and benches. They are happy for us to BBQ there, as long as we take our rubbish away and don't set fire to the place. Depending what the weather's doing, you can hire surf-boards etc at St Veda's Surf Shop or partake of some refreshments from the Café or nearby St Veda's Hotel. Watch this space...and the weather! Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Poor Diving Weather?

The east coast has still been suffering a bit from poor weather for diving, and even at St Mary's Loch some evenings have been rained off. Some diving has been possible though, and the weather will get better eventually (won't it?)

Belated Congratulations

Well done to Ally who qualified as a ScotSAC Sports Diver by completing the crossover from PADI Open Water diver at our training weekend in April.

Oban weekend photos

Special thanks to Don for lots of photos from our Oban weekend. They'll be on the gallery soon. Anyone else got pics they want online?

First Dives at St Mary's

With the east coast still suffering a bit from rough weather, and a low tide this evening, it wasn't good for diving in the sea. So for the first time this year we headed inland instead and went to St Mary's Loch. Trainees Grant and Alastair are seen here getting ready to go, with BDO Hugh (not getting ready).

16 April 2008

Congratulations

Well done to Graham who qualified as a Sports Diver on Saturday. Graham's final outing as a trainee was a boat dive at the Skellies off St Abbs, acting as dive leader to BDO Hugh. This photo is them setting out for a similar dive last year.

Pool photos

Some photos of a training night at Peebles are now online.

Peebles Pool sessions finish

Our pool sessions in Peebles will finish this week for the "summer" so this is the last chance to use the pool before we start going to open water midweek.

Training Trips

David Cairns is arranging the spring training weekend at Oban - accomodation at Lagnakeil - for April 25-27. contact him for details asap if you haven't already got your name listed.

Written assessment

Congratulations to all this year's trainees who sat the writen assessment last week. (Some still have a little remedial work to do - details from David S or at final "lecture".)

Peeblesshire News

Some excellent photos of the Try-dive we put on for the local Round Table were in last week's Peeblesshire News. Any other newcomers wanting a try-dive, please see our Try-a-Dive information. Experienced divers are also welcome to get in touch to join us for pool sessions or open-water trips.

Annual General Meeting

3 new Committee members were elected at our 2008 AGM: Marion Fraser agreed to take on the job of Social Secretary (as long as we all reply when she emails us); and Jim Tilston and Alistair Bradshaw joins as committee members with the main role for Jim being our lottery funding bid, and for Alistair being apprentice equipment officer. Other officebearers are as previous - see "The Committee" section.

Lectures and Pool training

This session's lectures are nearly complete, with equipment maintenance being the last main one, and some revision before the written assessment in a couple of weeks. Well done to the trainees who are nearly finished pool training too. Qualified divers are reminded that they are welcome to join us in the pool, for practice or exercise or fun (or all of the above?).

Cyprus Trip

The trip to Cyprus in autumn has now been booked and the deposit paid! It will probably still be possible for others to join later as there were still places on the plane.

Training Trips

David Cairns is taking on some arrangements for training trip(s) soon. Look out for more details, possibly including Capernwray as well as east or west coast sites in Scotland.

29 February 2008

Annual General Meeting

Our 2008 AGM will be on Wednesday 27th February at 7pm (or maybe a bit later?) in the McFarlane Hall, Peebles. Business includes electing the Committee (Chair, BDO, secretary, treasurer, equipment officer, training officer, social secretary and ordinary members), our Lottery fund application and budget, plans for training weekend, etc. All members welcome. (and remember to have your PeebSAC fees paid up by then)

Lectures

There won't be a lecture on the 27th as we'll be having the AGM then instead. This session's lectures are nearing completion, with equipment maintenance, some more Buhlmann's tables, and revision before the written assessment.

Cyprus Trip

Plans for the trip to Cyprus in autumn are nearly finalised - if you want to go and haven't had the email to confirm dates etc tell David S. a.s.a.p.. If you've not already booked and decide that you want to join that might be possible later.

Committee Meeting

The last Commitee meeting before the AGM will be on Tuesday 19th. As usual this is open to all members, although this will be a short meeting mainly to finalise the proposal for the lottery bid, (and large scale spending will be subject to agreement at the AGM?).

Training Days

Some hardy souls were out diving at the weekend. The weather was cold but the vis was ok and more assessments were completed. Plans for our spring weekend aren't settled yet.

Ice Diving

If it hasn't been too cold for you over the winter you might be interested in another lecture from Edinburgh University Sub Aqua Club. Following on from the excellent talk on High-Resolution Imaging of Wrecks, they are hosting a talk on Ice Diving, by Ben Panter. Hear and see his experiences on ice diving in the Alps - 80 metre vis and about as far from the sea as you can get in Europe! Tuesday 26th February, LT183 Old College, Edinburgh. Start at 7:30 pm.

18 February 2008

Best wishes for 2008

The weather may not have been great for diving but the club will have a busy start to 2008. On Tuesday 8th January there will be a Committee meeting at the County, business may include plans for a trip to Cyprus in late summer/autumn, and lottery funding. Commitee meetings are open to all members.

Pool training and lectures re-start on Wednesday 9th January at Peebles, and Thursday 10th at the Commie.

Sunday 13th is scheduled for some open water diving (depending on weather, health, etc - watch out for email/text, or get in touch if interested).

And on Tuesday 15th January some of us will be going to a a talk on "High-Resolution Imaging of British Wrecks" in Edinburgh - again get in touch for details if interested eg for sharing transport.
